The Work Smart Contracts for the aiGovDAO fall into the categories of development, consulting, and research.

Development WSCs[edit | edit source]

Natural Language Translation Work Smart Contract (tWSC)[edit | edit source]

The first example for how to charge fees for a specialized AI product is the case of developing for-profit work protocols around hand-tailored natural language translation software for an international business.

We showcase how money and academic credit can be earned by aiGovDAO as a research community that creates open source research and free tools in a for-profit primary DAO.

As the world becomes more globally interconnected, translation becomes more and more important. There are a number of open and closed-source machine translation tools (open-source: Libre Translation, Marian NMT, etc.; and closed-source: Google Translate, DeepL, etc.). These tools are generally free at the conversational level. However, translation of either highly interpretive and/or high stakes documents (e.g., poetry, literature, legal documents) are often out of current machine translation scope.

A fee-driven work protocol will require the development of a Translation Work Smart Contract (tWSC). This is done following the above 2-phase cycle:

  • Phase 1. Members develop and curate open source research on machine translation and free AI translation tools for the public. During this phase, power is not formalized. Instead, governance protocols emerge from discussions which end in group consensus on plans for future profitable activities. The goal of Phase 1 is to come to agreement on which work serves the goal of guiding the development of AI tech, in line with the group's values. Governance protocols for how to formally determine power in the group are agreed on, but not implemented until Phase 2. This includes the development of the tWSC.
  • Phase 2. Members charge fees to customize the tools to specific customer needs. In this phase, power is formalized following DGF workflow. REP tokens are minted as fees are earned by members, and the reference mechanisms of the Forum distribute power to members using the structure delineated in Phase 1, in line with the culture and values of the DAO.

In the second phase, developers are offering a translation service for various document types at different scales. For example, a customer might wish to have a tool which translates Vietnamese to Swahili--a translation tool trained specifically on their company's legal documents. In this scenario, the developer chosen to complete the tWSC would collect a repertoire of paid and free translation computer-aided translation (CAT) and translation tools as well as professional translators to polish the final product.

The for-profit results of Phase 2 work, will incentivize further development in Phase 1. Iteratively, such work in Phase 1 will generate further tools and Work Smart Contracts to serve the idiosyncratic needs of customers.
